Episode #7 – Playing over the Bar Lines

Today I begin to address the questions and comments – first with Markus’ question about playing longer lines that aren’t restricted by the underlying chord structure

That’s really well explained, thanks a lot Peter!
Enlightening as always. Thanks Peter! I wanted to call attention to something that you mentioned in passing, and for me , a door-opening concept: “…start improvising over a chord BEFORE you get to that chord!” Mike Pellara teaches a simple excercise, playing first, a melodic line ON the chord change. Then practice the line 2 beats before the chord, then 3 beats before, then 2 bars before, etc. This has really helped me to listen for lines that aren’t so “every 2 bars : cut and paste”.
